Having watched and supported each other's varied musical careers over several decades, old friends Nicholas Whittaker and Will Howes have united to explore their shared love of electronica, jazz, post-rock and all points between.

The power of their first release, 'Dream of the Red Chamber' lies in its emotional and textural range. The near stillness of the contemplative 'Routine Contentment' contrasts with the dense, raw power of 'Maroon' as much as the sci-fi abstractions of 'Antioch' do with the rustic heartache of 'Oceanstorm'. The closing salvo of 'Resolve', with its sombre, choir-like vocals, and 'Pantiau' whose brutal majesty is redolent of Tim Hecker toying with a 'Blade Runner' score remake, is a fitting end to a stirring and fascinating release.

Diagonal's Whittaker plays woodwinds and sings; Arcs' Howes plays guitar and piano.
